I went home this weekend, so I am typing this from the comfort of my bed in my hometown. My high school was having it's homecoming, and I had to be present to pass on the crown to the next homecoming queen ('07 homecoming queen, baby!). After the football game was over, my friends and I went to a party. During the laughing and talking and snacking, a male friend of mine realized that he had gotten BBQ sauce on his bright, white polo shirt. It wasn't something that was horribly noticeable, but it was noticeable to him and to the people there when it was pointed out.
So what did he do? He asked if someone had a tide-to-go pen. He was going to go ask the mom of the girl whose house we were at if she had one. We stopped him. Why? Because we knew that she would laugh in his face just like we did. Yes, there was a possibility that she might have a tide-to-go pen, but it was the fact that a male was asking for one. A guy was SO concerned with his appearance that he wanted to fix his small problem.
Now, if a girl had spilled something on herself, she could have made a big deal and no one would think any differently about her. Girls can be so wrapped up in their appearance, and no one will give it a second thought. The minute a guy overly worries about his physical appearance is the minute he is considered gay by all his close friends. And possibly some strangers.
